I was trying to get linux to boot straigh to X and give me a graphical login. So with advice, I changed the runlevel from 5 to 4 in the inittab file. It worked, linux boots straight to X and gives me a graphical login. Good, no. I login and it goes into a loop. Restarting X and bringing me back to the login again.

Help!!! How to resolve the ¡°Auto login loop" problem?
On login, it prompts for user name and password but, after entering the fields it loops back with the same logon screen. Hence I am in an infinite loop with no way to get into Windows! It does the same thing in Safe Mode. I have tried doing and emergency repair, but it has notfixed the problem. Any ideas.

A clients sbs 4.5 was probably hacked; on logging into the system, there is a loop back to the logon screen again. (The system shutdown button is also greyed out). The passwords do work as you get an error for wrong log ins. Also the server can be accessed from the work stations and files manipulated.
